From lost to loved - one dog at a time

The story behind Second Chance Paws.

Second Chance Paws was born from a simple belief: every dog deserves a second chance.

Abby saw a Facebook post about two dogs that had been dumped at a bank in Winona, Texas. She drove 30 minutes to check on them — and kept going back for months.

Every visit, she brought food and worked patiently to earn their trust. Eventually, she was able to bring the mama dog and her puppy into her home. It took over a year of rehabilitation and love before they both found their forever homes.

Tired of seeing constant posts about dumped and unwanted dogs, she made a decision: she would open her home to as many as she could. What started as helping two dogs quickly grew. She and her family began taking in dumped dogs, puppies, and dogs whose owners could no longer keep them. At one point, they had over 20 dogs in their home.

That’s when everything changed.

She partnered with Take Me Home Transport. For the first time, dogs were able to leave Texas and find homes in other states. Adoptions started happening. Dogs were finally getting real second chances instead of staying in limbo.

Today, Second Chance Paws works directly with Smith County Animal Shelter as our main source for pulling dogs in need. Instead of keeping every dog in our home, we now provide medical care, rehabilitation, and safe transport through our growing network of partners. This allows us to help more dogs without burning out — while still giving each one the time and care they deserve.
